In India, the esports scene has been steadily growing, and now, six elite League of Legends (LoL) Indian gamers are set to embark on a remarkable journey to represent their nation at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, from September 25 to 29. This article delves into the details of this momentous event, the Indian LoL team’s preparations, and what the future holds for esports in India.

The Rise of Esports in India:

Esports in India has experienced exponential growth over the past decade. With a burgeoning fan base and increasing investment from both corporations and individuals, India’s competitive gaming landscape has become a force to be reckoned with. Games like PUBG Mobile, Free Fire, and Dota 2 have garnered immense popularity, and League of Legends, a 5v5 multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game, is no exception.

LoL at the Asian Games 2023:

The Asian Games, held every four years, is a prestigious sporting event featuring traditional sports alongside esports. In 2023, LoL has been selected as one of the seven esports medal events, marking a significant milestone for competitive gaming. Hangzhou, China, serves as the host city for this thrilling tournament.

The Competition:

A total of 15 LoL teams, including the Indian squad, will compete for medals in Hangzhou. India’s journey to the tournament began with an impressive unbeaten run during the seeding event for South Asian countries in Macau. This achievement earned them a spot in the quarter-finals, alongside other top-seeded teams such as Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and host nation China.

Group Stage:

The remaining 11 teams have been divided into four groups. These groups are as follows:

Group A: Hong Kong China, the Republic of Korea, Kazakhstan

Group B: Japan, Vietnam, Palestine

Group C: UAE, Chinese Taipei, Maldives

Group D: Thailand, Macao China

The group stage matches, scheduled for September 25-26, will adopt a best-of-one (BO1) format. After the round-robin stage, the group winners will advance to the quarter-finals.

Knockout Rounds:

The knockout rounds, commencing on September 27, will feature a more intense best-of-three (BO3) format from the quarter-final stage onwards. As the competition heats up, the semi-finals are slated for September 28, with the grand final set to captivate fans on September 29.
