1 years ago By AI Smith

Call of Duty recently revealed that it has around 90 million monthly players. Additionally, the developer, Activision Blizzard also stated that half of all Call of Duty engagements on mobile devices

These stats come at a time when Microsoft’s long-running pursuit of Activision Blizzard is nearing its conclusion.Microsoft and Activision Blizzard officially postponed the deadline of their merger. This will allow them some more time for the $69 billion deal to get approval from UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). A resolution on the merger is expected in the coming weeks.

The Federal Trade Commission’s failed attempt to block the deal, with Sony boss Jim Ryan drafting in to highlight the phenomenal popularity of the shooter series were factors coming in between the deal. The game was arguably the world’s premier shooter. Its close competitor EA’s Battlefield series also can compete with CoD.

Call Of Duty Growth

Activision Blizzard released financial figures recently, which prove why Call of Duty is so popular. The revenue of Activision increased 17% year-over-year for the past three months prior to June 30. Additionally, the operating income rose a whopping 80% year-over-year.

Premium Call of Duty sales (most of these will be for last year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2) increased considerably year-over-year. The Second quarter in-game net bookings (DLC and microtransactions) were more than both the first quarters and even in past year. According to Activision Blizzard, Season 3 was “the highest-grossing Modern Warfare 2 in-game season to date, driven by a strong community response to gameplay enhancements and the new BlackCell battle pass offering.”

The developer generated an overall $1.5 billion from DLC and microtransactions during the past quarter, with a rise of 30% year-on-year. This numbers have further boosted because of the early June launch of Diablo 4, which involves an in-game cosmetics shop, However, major revenue came from Call of Duty’s microtransactions.

On the other hand, Call of Duty’s Mobile engagement and net bookings, meanwhile, were observed to be stable year-over-year. The lifetime worldwide consumer spending on the game since its launch in October 2019 surpassed $3 billion in the second quarter ending June 30th, according to Activision.

Although Call of Duty has been a huge success, Activision’s own Monthly Active User (MAU) number for the said quarter reduced year-on-year by two million to 92 million. This means that the developers MAUs have dropped drastically, post the launch of Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.0.

Meanwhile, Activision will be soon revealing Call of Duty 2023, which is expected to be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile is currently being tested, with a release expected later this year.
